Six Months later…

Sitting at the front of the bus still feels so alien. The sounds of chatter seem different. Even the smell is unfamiliar. Can’t tell if it’s sweat, mould, or just the bus’s unique odour. Sean is next to me, his fingers interlocking mine—and we’re as far from the back seats as possible.

I try not to glance at Lisa and Katie as they parade their latest suck-up friend. Stacey Bell. They’re such hypocrites. We spent most of last year making fun of Stacey and her boyfriend.

I should warn her that they’re not to be trusted, but I’m guessing they’ve already dug their claws into her, poisoned her mind, saying all sorts of bullshit stories about me. Although some of it is probably true.

The only thing I’m grateful for is Lisa’s secrecy. Even after all this time, she still hasn’t told the police about Ben. With all those warnings on TV about parents serving jail time for not giving up their infected children, I was certain that there’d be a knock on the door.

But it never came.

I’ve thought about swallowing my pride and thanking her, but I’m still not certain what she knows. What if they were blind drunk that night? What if they couldn’t remember what Ben looked like? It’s unlikely, especially with all the news coverage and talk about martial law—but you never know.

A loud, sarcastic laugh travels down the aisle towards us. It belongs to Katie. I’d recognise it anywhere, and I’m positive it’s aimed at me.

Just ignore them.

The bus stops outside the college and we get off. Sean takes my hand as we walk past the security guard at the gates. God knows why we need one. It’s not like roaming vampires are any threat during the day. And the money they spent on the high, barbwire fences could have been used for something else. This whole dump could use an update.

“What do you think will happen if they declare martial law?” Sean asks as we enter the building.

“It won’t come to that,” I say with confidence. “The news said that they think they might have found the cause. Some kind of mutated strain of the Zika virus.”

“I saw that too, but my Dad reckons that’s bullshit. He read somewhere that the government are just pretending to have a solution, just to stop widespread panic.”

I can’t help but chuckle. “Yeah, like that’s going to work. People already think it’s the apocalypse.”

“Isn’t it?” Ryan says, appearing beside me as we walk along the corridor.

“Don’t talk rubbish,” Sean replies. “This’ll all be sorted out in the next few months. I guarantee you.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” Ryan asks. “There hasn’t been a human baby born anywhere in months. Not wanting to go all biblical on you, mate, but if that doesn’t sound like the end of days, I don’t know what does.”

“We don’t know that for sure,” I point out, defensively, even though he’s probably right. “When the government lifts the ban on pregnancy, I bet you there’ll be loads of women able to conceive normal, healthy babies.
